Instagram Scheduled Posts Not Posting? Causes and Fixes
Sources checked on October 12, 2026 · 31 sources
When a scheduled Instagram post, Reel or carousel does not go out, Meta’s documentation points to a short list of things that stop it: the account is not a professional account, the scheduling tool’s access has expired or been removed, the Facebook Page link is missing or needs authorizing (for tools that connect through Facebook), the media is outside Instagram’s limits, the account has reached the publishing cap, or the post uses something Instagram’s API cannot publish, in which case tools such as Buffer and Later send a phone reminder instead of posting, according to their help pages. The checks below run from the cheapest to look at to the most work. The list is compiled from Meta’s documentation and two tools’ help pages, checked on October 12, 2026, not from support cases.
First, work out which of three things happened#
- The tool says “sent”, but nothing is on your profile. It may have been a reminder. According to Buffer’s scheduling page, checked October 12, 2026, for a notification post that status only means the reminder went to your phone. Start at check 1.
- The tool shows an error. Find its wording in the table of Meta’s error messages.
- You scheduled it in the Instagram app or in Meta Business Suite. Different rules apply: go to that section.
If the post was for another network, see scheduled posts not publishing on other networks.
Nine checks, cheapest first#
The order is by the effort each check takes, not by how frequently each cause happens. There is no data on frequency.
1. Was it scheduled as a reminder instead of an automatic post?#
Look at the post in your tool’s queue. According to Buffer’s help page, checked October 12, 2026, a post scheduled as a notification shows a Notify label, does not publish by itself, and cannot be delivered when no mobile device is linked to the account. Later’s troubleshooting page says a notification post you did not finish does not go live. Checks 4, 7 and 9 cover why a tool falls back to a reminder.
2. Was it a temporary failure at Instagram’s end?#
Open Meta’s status page. It lists Graph API, Facebook Login and Meta Business Suite. On October 12, 2026 it had no separate line for Instagram publishing.
Meta’s error reference also documents failures that pass by themselves: a server error, a timeout while downloading the media, and a video that is not ready for publishing. The media reference says video uploads are asynchronous, so a Reel can fail on a slow upload and go through on a retry.
3. Is the Instagram account restricted or flagged?#
Meta’s error reference has two messages for this, both in the table below: one for an account that is inactive, checkpointed or restricted, and one for a publishing action suspected to be spam. Meta’s changelog entry of September 28, 2026 adds an error for a linked Facebook account that is restricted and cannot publish video. What triggers them is not documented.
Nothing in a scheduling tool clears this. Sign in to the Instagram app, and to Facebook if your tool connects through it, and complete what it asks for.
4. Is the Instagram account a professional account?#
Meta’s Instagram Platform overview says the API requires a professional account, meaning a business or creator account. For a personal profile, Buffer and Later both say they can only send a reminder. The same rule applies when an assistant does the posting: see what Instagram requires of ChatGPT and other AI tools.
The fix is to switch the account type in the Instagram app. According to Instagram’s help page, the route is Settings and activity, then “Account type and tools” under “For professionals”, then “Switch to professional account”. The page notes that a private personal account becomes public when it switches.
One Meta page, Instagram API with Facebook Login, adds that publishing Stories is available to business accounts only. Meta’s Content Publishing guide does not repeat it.
5. Is the tool’s access still valid?#
Your tool holds an access token. Meta’s overview says a long-lived token is valid for 60 days and can be refreshed. It can also end early: Meta’s page on token errors, written for Facebook Login, names security events, logging out and a password change, and says Facebook does not notify the app. So a tool may find out only when your scheduled post fails. If the tool was removed in Instagram’s settings for apps and websites, Instagram’s help page says a removed app can only access public information on the account. The page does not mention publishing.
The fix is to reconnect the Instagram account in the tool and accept every permission it asks for. Later’s reset page says it needs them to post on your behalf.
Whether a tool refreshes its token by itself is not documented by Meta, so no reconnect interval can be given. Neither is what an Instagram password change does to a token issued through Instagram Login.
6. Is the Facebook Page link in place, if your tool connects through Facebook?#
Only one of Meta’s two routes needs a Page. Meta’s overview says Instagram Login works without a linked Facebook Page, and Facebook Login serves accounts linked to one. Later, for one, offers both ways to connect.
On the Facebook route, look at four things:
- Your role on the Page. Meta’s publish reference requires whoever connected the tool to hold the MANAGE or CREATE_CONTENT task on the Page. Those are the API’s names. For Facebook Page Settings and Meta Business Suite, Meta’s overview lists “Content” and “Full control” as the tasks that let you grant a tool the publishing permission.
- Page Publishing Authorization. If the Page requires it, nothing can be published until it is completed (Meta’s Content Publishing guide), by the deadline in Facebook’s notification. According to Facebook’s help page, you complete it in Facebook’s settings under Meta Account, Your information and permissions, Identity confirmation.
- Two-factor authentication. If the Page requires it and you have not completed it, the publish reference says “the request will fail”.
- The link itself. Switching back to a personal account disconnects the Page (Instagram’s help page). Linking one needs full control of the Page (Meta’s Business Help page).
7. Is the photo or video inside Instagram’s limits?#
These are the limits Meta documents for its API, from Meta’s media reference and Content Publishing guide, checked October 12, 2026. A tool may convert a file to fit them: Buffer’s aspect ratio page says it converts an image larger than 8 MB to a smaller size so that it can be published. Check your tool’s own page as well.
| Content type | File format | Largest file | Shape (aspect ratio) | Length | Other documented limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feed photo | JPEG only | 8 MB | 4:5 to 1.91:1 | Does not apply | Width 320 to 1440 pixels, scaled if outside |
| Carousel | Photos and videos, no Reels | Photos: 8 MB each. Videos: not documented | Cropped to match the first image, 1:1 by default | Videos: not documented | 2 to 10 items, one caption for the post |
| Reel | MOV or MP4 | 300 MB | 0.01:1 to 10:1, 9:16 recommended | 3 seconds to 15 minutes | 23 to 60 frames a second, at most 1920 pixels wide |
| Story photo | JPEG | 8 MB | 9:16 recommended | Does not apply | No stickers |
| Story video | MOV or MP4 | 100 MB | 0.1:1 to 10:1, 9:16 recommended | 3 to 60 seconds | 23 to 60 frames a second, at most 1920 pixels wide, no stickers |
| Caption | Text | Does not apply | Does not apply | 2,200 characters | 20 @ tags. Hashtags: 30 or 5, see below |
Four of these need a note:
- Photo format. Whether your tool converts a PNG or HEIC file to JPEG is not documented by Meta.
- Photo shape, a conflict. Buffer’s aspect ratio page and Later’s restrictions page name 3:4 as accepted. Meta’s reference stops at 4:5, and Buffer’s checklist says 0.8. Go by the preview in the tool you use. Buffer says a file outside the range is scheduled as a notification.
- Carousel size. The Instagram app takes up to 20 photos and videos, according to Instagram’s help page. The API takes 10, so a tool cannot auto-publish a carousel of 11 to 20.
- Hashtags, a conflict. Meta’s media reference says 30. Instagram’s help page on hashtags says 5. Buffer’s scheduling page says Instagram allows up to 5 in the caption and up to 30 in the first comment, and that Buffer enforces both. Meta’s changelog of September 28, 2026 adds an error for a caption with too many hashtags, with no number. Stay at 5 in the caption: that is inside every figure here.
To check a caption’s length, paste it into the character counter. If a post went out without its caption, Meta’s changelog documents that a publish can succeed while the caption is dropped. Meta’s API also takes alt text on image posts: see alt text limits on each network.
8. Has the account reached the publishing cap?#
Meta’s own pages conflict on the number. The Content Publishing guide says 100 API-published posts in a moving 24 hours in one section and 50 in another. The publish reference, the limit reference and Later’s help page say 50. Plan for 50: the figure for your account is whatever Meta’s limit endpoint returns to your tool.
What counts toward it, as far as Meta says:
- Only posts published through the API. Posts made by hand in the Instagram app are not mentioned as counting.
- A carousel counts once.
- The window is the last 24 hours, not a calendar day, although Meta’s error advice says to “try again the following day”.
- Meta words the limit per Instagram account. It does not say how the count works when two tools publish to the same account.
- Reels and Stories are published as containers, which is what the limit reference counts. Meta does not say it in so many words.
According to Later’s help page, a post that fails at the cap has to be created again and scheduled for a later time.
9. Does the post use something a tool can only send as a reminder?#
Meta’s documentation describes no reminder or notification route for publishing. It lists what the publishing API does not support. The reminder is what Buffer and Later do about it, and each documents its own list. Meta’s side, from the media reference, the guide, the overview and the Audio API page:
- Story stickers (link, poll, location) and filters are not supported.
- Music. The media reference says music tagging is for original audio only. The Audio API page says music can be attached to Reels, on the Facebook route only. Both statements stand.
- Product tags, a conflict. The guide says shopping tags are not supported. The overview lists product tagging as supported with Facebook Login.
- More than 10 carousel items, or a Reel inside a carousel (check 7).
The tools’ side, not run for this post: Buffer’s help page lists music on posts or Stories, links or text on Stories, product tags and topics as reminder-only, and its notification page says music on a Reel publishes automatically through a Facebook connection. Later’s restrictions page names music, stickers, polls, quizzes and links on Stories, and says auto-published Reels support original audio only.
Either remove the feature, or finish the post from the reminder on your phone.
Error messages Meta documents, and what each one points to#
These are from Meta’s Instagram error reference, its Graph API error page and its page on token errors, checked October 12, 2026. A tool may show its own wording instead, so match on the meaning. Words in curly braces are Meta’s placeholders.
| Code / subcode | Message as Meta documents it | What Meta says about it | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9007 / 2207027 | “The media is not ready for publishing, please wait for a moment” | Publish when the container’s status is FINISHED | 2 |
| -1 / 2207001 | No message text on Meta’s page | “Instagram server error. Try again.” | 2 |
| 25 / 2207050 | “The Instagram account is restricted.” | The account is inactive, checkpointed or restricted | 3 |
| 4 / 2207051 | “We restrict certain activity to protect our community. Tell us if you think we made a mistake.” | The publishing action is suspected to be spam | 3 |
| 190 / 463 | “Error validating access token: Session has expired on” a date (Meta’s sample) | The access token has expired, been revoked or is otherwise invalid | 5 |
| 190 / 460 | “Error validating access token: The session is invalid because the user logged out.” (Meta’s sample) | The person logged out of the app or changed their password | 5 |
| Subcode 492, no code listed by Meta | Message text not documented | The person behind the Page access token has no appropriate role on the Page | 6, by inference: Meta documents this for a Page access token and does not tie it to Instagram publishing |
| 36003 / 2207009 | “The submitted image with aspect ratio {submitted-ratio} cannot be published. Please submit an image with a valid aspect ratio.” |
Try again with an image within 4:5 to 1.91:1 | 7 |
| 352 / 2207026 | “The video format is not supported. Please check spec for supported {video} format” |
Upload a MOV or MP4 | 7 |
| 36004 / 2207010 | “The submitted image’s caption was {submitted-caption-length} characters long. The maximum number of characters permitted for a caption is {maximum-caption-length}. Please submit media with a shorter caption.” |
The maximum is 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags | 7 |
| 100 / 2207028 | “Your post won’t work as a carousel. Carousels need at least 2 photos/videos and no more than 10 photos/videos.” | Try again with an acceptable number of photos or videos | 7 |
| 9 / 2207042 | “You reached maximum number of posts that is allowed to be published by Content Publishing API.” | The account has reached its publishing limit | 8 |
Meta’s list has no message for a personal account, a missing Page link, Page Publishing Authorization or the two-factor case.
If you scheduled it in Instagram or Meta Business Suite#
In the Instagram app. Instagram’s help page on scheduling gives no list of reasons why a scheduled post fails, and no error messages. What it states are requirements, and those are what you can check: you need a public account, and you can schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance. Product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers do not work with scheduled content. The post waits under “Scheduled content”. For other networks, see how far ahead each network lets you schedule.
In Meta Business Suite. Meta has a troubleshooting page for this, written for Business Suite on a computer. It says a scheduled post “may not publish at its scheduled time”, and gives four reasons:
- You lack access to publish posts. Ask the owner of the business portfolio to assign you access to the Facebook Page or Instagram account. Meta’s desktop help page asks for full control of, or content permission for, the account you post to, and the mobile help page for at least partial access to both accounts.
- The Instagram account has unresolved issues. Log in to the Instagram app, follow the steps in any pop-up notification, then try again in Business Suite.
- The Instagram account was hacked. Try logging in. If you cannot, and suspect the account has been hacked, the page links to Meta’s steps for that.
- A system error stopped the post. Click Content, then Scheduled, and see whether an error message says the post failed to publish. Click the post, then “Publish now”.
The desktop help page also limits an Instagram post to ten photos. Meta’s status page has a line for Meta Business Suite.
How to reschedule a post that failed#
An upload is only good for 24 hours: Meta’s media reference says a container expires after 24 hours, and for an expired one the error reference says to generate a new one. After that, the post has to be uploaded again, which is what a tool’s retry or duplicate action is for. Buffer’s help page names its Duplicate action for a reminder that never arrived or whose time has passed.
Look at your profile first. A publish can succeed with its caption dropped (check 7), and a second attempt would then put the post up twice.
Frequently asked questions#
Why did my Instagram post go to my phone as a notification instead of posting?#
The tool could not auto-publish it, so it fell back to a reminder. The triggers Buffer and Later document include a personal account (check 4), a photo or video outside the accepted shape or, on Buffer, a Reel shorter than 3 seconds or longer than 15 minutes (check 7), and a feature the API does not publish (check 9). A tool setting can also do it: Buffer’s help page names “Enable Notifications by default”.
Do I need a Facebook Page to schedule Instagram posts?#
It depends on how your tool connects: Meta documents one route that needs no linked Page and one that requires it (check 6). Instagram’s help page for its in-app scheduler does not mention a Page.
Can I schedule Instagram Stories?#
Instagram’s help page for the in-app scheduler names reels, photos and carousel posts, not Stories. Meta Business Suite’s mobile help page lists “Posts, Reels, Stories” as content you can schedule. Through the API a Story can be published without stickers, and according to one Meta page only for business accounts.
Why does my scheduled Reel fail when photos post fine?#
A video is uploaded and processed before it can be published, and Meta’s media reference says receiving a container ID does not guarantee that the upload succeeded. Reels also have limits of their own (check 7), and music from Instagram’s library is one more reason on a tool that auto-publishes original audio only (check 9).
How many posts can I schedule on Instagram in a day?#
In the Instagram app it is 25 scheduled posts a day, according to Instagram’s help page. Through a scheduling tool, Meta’s pages say 50 or 100 API-published posts in a moving 24 hours, and a carousel counts once (check 8).
